Tactical Medic Team
The Forsyth
County EMS Tactical Medic Team was formed in 2002 and provides
medical support to Winston-Salem and Kernersville police
departments’ Special Enforcement teams during training and illegal
situations, as they arise. The Medics on the team have completed a
160 hour TEMS course. The course provides the medics with the
procedures and tactics of Law Enforcement “Special Teams”. The Team
has also completed a 56 hour “Basic SWAT course”. The medics on the
team train an average of 24-30 hours a month and attend specialized
training inside and outside of Forsyth County. The Tactical Medic
Team currently consists of one medic who holds the rank of Captain
and is also the team leader, and four medics that hold the rank of
Corporal.
The Forsyth
County EMS Tactical Team also has two tactical physicians that are
on-call 24/7 should special needs or orders arise. The physicians
also respond to call-outs and remain in the command post as medical
command. The physicians also attend training with the Tactical Team.
All members of the tactical team are certified at the Haz-mat
Operations level and can operate in hazards such as meth labs that
require a level-A response. Try outs are held on an as needed basis.
Try outs are open to any medic that has been with FCEMS for at least
one year. The team provides on the spot skilled medical treatment to
law enforcement personnel, victims, perpetrators and the public
without delay should the need arise. The team has full tactical gear
such as ballistic vest, gas mask, ballistic helmets and a variety of
medical equipment at their disposal. Team members are not sworn law
enforcement officer and do not carry firearms, but are trained to
secure and “make safe” a variety of weapons. The FCEMS Tactical
Medic Team strives to bring “Top Notch” medical care at a moments
notice and will hold themselves to a higher standard of care at all
times.
